It Wasn't Me (Featuring Ricardo..Johnson)

"It Wasn't Me: was the 2002 hit by Kingston, Jamaica reggae singer Shaggy or as his Mama named him, Orville Richard Burrell.
For those of you who may not know the song...it was, in fact, him.
Ashley Todd's, claim regarding a man who looked a lot like Shaggy, had robbed, sexually assaulted and carved a backwards "B" (presumably for Barack) on her face resonated with just about the same tenor of truth as Shaggy's claims.
It was, in fact, NOT him.
I have always felt that claiming racism in personal or professional situations was always something to be done very judiciously because every time that card was played and played wrong it hurts all of those people who are fighting when racism is, in fact, at play.
This rule should most definitely be in effect with respect to sexual assault. So, seeing Ms. Todd being carted away in cuffs yesterday delighted me.
I know many have talked about her possible mental problems and considering she worked for the national collegiate Republican Party, insanity may certainly be a resonable defense.
I, however, have a much larger beef...
John McCain and the Republicans have said the actions of a couple of knuckle heads trying to scam a few more dollars by registering such luminaries as M. Mouse of Anaheim, California and Orlando, Florida (he homestead in Florida for tax reasons) and Mr. Anthony Romo, of the Dallas Football Cowboys is nothing... N O T H I N G, in comparison to this woman's ruse.
In 1994 when Susan Smith said a Black man had carjacked her and drove away with her sons still in the car, many Black comedians joked that that was the first clue that it wasn't true because most Black Men wont drive off with their own children.
Now as a Black Father of four beautiful children for whom I drive (more than I'd like) often, I would like to say for the record that's not entirely true, but it was a good joke regarding a historically tragic event.
Ms. Todd's lie about me and all my brothers, father and sons who look like me is not nearly as horrific, but the fact that the RNC has not come out to denounce this women and her behavior with all of its inherent complications had a much greater chance at "tearing away at the great fabric of this nation" as John McCain said in the last debate than ACORN's little voter registration snafus.
This time it was not, in fact, me and the Police and at least some of the American public stopped, checked and got it right BEFORE they got the rope.
There may be Hope after all.

Thief in the Right

A Thief in the Night is a 1972 film about a young woman who knows and has heard the Christian gospel, but dismisses it due to her satisfaction with secular life. One morning she wakes up to discover that her husband, a Christian, and millions of others have disappeared.

The National Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for the widespread disenfranchisement of African Americans in the United States and 35 years later 1million black citizens of this nation awoke to realize that they too had disappeared, that is...from the voting rolls.

While the Republicans continue their onslaught of McCarthy era attacks on Barack Obama in the court of public opinion, they also have waged a war in judicial courts on one of the most sacred of American Freedoms... voting.

This attack comes in the form of "spoiling" votes.

Spoilage can occur by a faulty machine, lack of proper identification, registered name and actual name not matching up and some of it is the product of old machines, new technology and even honest mistakes.

However, Civil Rights Commissioner Christopher Edley, Dean of Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley, took a nationwide study and found that half of all ballots spoiled in the U.S.A. -- about 1 million votes -- were cast by nonwhite voters.

In the movie the lead, Patty, realizes that the Rapture, mentioned in the Bible, has happened and she is living in the last days of the Antichrist. A government system is set up and those who do not receive the mark identifying them with UNITE will be arrested. Patty wakes only to realize it was all a dream. She then reaches to turn on the radio and hears that all she dreamed was in fact about to happen.

In 2000 when Pat Buchanan won an African American dominated Florida county in which he never even campaigned, we were told it was our imagination. When voters in Ohio were disenfranchised in 2004, we were told that the votes were insignificant to the outcome.

We cannot wake up the morning after the election, as a McCain supporter mentioned last week, to find that this election too has been stolen by the right.

Go to stealbackyourvote.org so the only disappearance that occurs is that of this administration and the policies of the thieves from the right.
